Toyota enters Indian EV market with the Urban Cruiser Ebella
The Urban Cruiser Ebella is essentially the global Urban Cruiser with a suffix added to the name. Closely related to Maruti Suzuki’s e Vitara, it is a small SUV measuring 4,285 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width and 1,640 mm in height, along with a 2,700 mm wheelbase.
In addition to its compact dimensions, an authentic SUV character, courtesy of a high ground clearance, an upright front fascia, muscular haunches and a commanding driving position, makes the Urban Cruiser Ebella appealing to Indian customers. Toyota distinguishes it from the e Vitara mainly with the hammerhead shark-inspired front-end and LED tail-lights positioned in parallel lines.
TKM offers the Urban Cruiser Ebella in two variants, both with a single-motor front-wheel-drive (FWD) setup. In the base variant, it uses a 49 kWh LFP battery pack and a motor that produces 106 kW and 189 Nm of torque. This configuration delivers a range of 440 kilometres, as per ARAI certification. In the top variant, TKM combines a 61 kWh LFP battery pack with a motor that develops 128 kW and 189 Nm of torque, giving the EV an ARAI-certified range of 543 kilometres.
Customers have a choice of three equipment lines for the Urban Cruiser Ebella: E1, E2 and E3. TKM offers premium features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, power-folding ORVMs, a 40:20:40 split, sliding and reclining rear seat, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, rear AC vents and connected car functions across the range. On the safety front, it equips the EV with seven airbags, front and rear parking sensors, a rear defogger, ABS, EBD and VSC, as well as hill-hold control, as standard.
Higher up in the line-up, TKM improves comfort and convenience with an electrically adjustable, ventilated driver’s seat, a ventilated front passenger seat, a fixed glass sunroof, a wireless smartphone charger and a JBL sound system with a subwoofer. It also increases safety with the addition of a 360-degree camera system, Adaptive High Beam, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Driver Attention Warning, Blind Spot Monitor and Pre-Collision Assist.
TKM sources the Urban Cruiser Ebella from Maruti Suzuki, which manufactures the model alongside the e Vitara in Hansalpur, Gujarat. The company will offer its first electric SUV with a choice of outright purchase or a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) ownership model.
