ChargePoint ends app and RFID access for private customers in Europe
Affected users have now been notified of the change by email. According to the message, the ChargePoint app and RFID card will soon be available in Europe only to drivers whose charging access is provided through an employer, fleet operator or leasing company. For all other users, the service will be discontinued from July. This means private EV drivers will no longer be able to use the ChargePoint app or RFID card to locate charging stations, initiate charging sessions or process payments.
In a related FAQ, ChargePoint has provided additional details on the transition. The company states that affected customer accounts will be permanently closed on 30 June 2026. Users with remaining funds in their ChargePoint Wallet will be able to request a refund to their registered payment method. However, ChargePoint cautions that the reimbursement process may take up to 90 days to complete.
Users registered through employers, fleet managers, charge point operators, station owners, or leasing providers are not affected. Personal credit balances will also remain available for such accounts. Whether these drivers can charge publicly outside their respective programmes depends on how the organisation has configured access.
ChargePoint emphasises that the change does not affect access to charging infrastructure itself. Drivers impacted by the discontinuation of the app and RFID service will still be able to charge at ChargePoint-operated stations and at charging points managed through the ChargePoint platform. Charging sessions can continue to be initiated using contactless bank cards, roaming services or third-party charging apps.
For the small number of charging stations that do not feature a card reader or display, ChargePoint says it is still working on an alternative solution to ensure continued access.
From ChargePoint’s perspective, this change reflects a strategic shift in focus. The company states in the FAQ that it aims to concentrate its app in Europe on users ‘who are set up through their employer, fleet manager, or car leasing provider.’
However, ChargePoint emphasises that this does not signal a withdrawal from Europe. “ChargePoint continues to invest in Europe and remains committed to supporting drivers, station owners, and partners across the region,” the company states.
The decision comes at a time when ChargePoint is already pivoting its European strategy towards commercial applications, fleets, and charge point operators. As recently as March, ChargePoint announced a collaboration with Ford Pro for Germany and the UK. This partnership focuses on charging solutions for commercial Ford Pro customers at home, in depots, and at workplaces.
In a recent interview with electrive, ChargePoint CEO Rick Wilmer also emphasised that Europe is set to become increasingly important for the company. In the fourth quarter of 2025, nearly a quarter of the company’s revenue came from Europe, with the long-term goal of increasing this share to 50% or more. ChargePoint sees particular potential in the fleet and CPO segments. “We’ve got a whole slew of new products coming into the market that were intentionally designed to serve both Europe and North America,” Wilmer said.
For private users, however, the announced change represents a significant shift. Those who have previously used the ChargePoint app as a standalone charging solution or the RFID card as an access method must find alternatives by the end of June.
