Scania opens battery testing lab in Sweden
Traton subsidiary Scania has commissioned a new battery laboratory at its research and development facilities in Södertälje, Sweden. The facility consists of three 250 m² test halls for battery cells, modules and packs.

VW to begin ID.4 production in the USA early
VW plans to start series production of the ID.4 at its US plant in Chattanooga in July and to bring the vehicles to dealers in “significant quantities” from September. That would be several months earlier than previously planned.

New battery test centre opened by TÜV in Germany
The German technical inspection agency TÜV Rheinland has opened its Battery Test Centre in Aachen. The facility is said to be the most modern independent test centre in Europe. Not only electrical tests and durability simulations can be carried out there, but also safety tests up to the destruction of the battery.

Mercedes lays the foundation for eCampus near Stuttgart
Mercedes-Benz has laid the symbolic foundation stone for a new competence centre for the research and development of future generations of batteries and battery cells on the grounds of its main plant in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim. The so-called ‘Mercedes-Benz eCampus’ is to be gradually put into operation from 2023.

StoreDot reports progress with silicon-dominated cells
Israeli battery developer StoreDot has reported progress in the stability of its fast-charging silicon-dominated battery cells. The company says it has exceeded 1,200 cycles with cells charged to 80 per cent in 15 minutes and then discharged for one hour.

Solid-state battery specialist and Volkswagen partner QuantumScape is expanding into the Asia-Pacific region and has announced the opening of a subsidiary in Kyoto, Japan, for this purpose. The new site will have an R&D laboratory that is scheduled to go into operation this year.

Honda & SES to develop lithium batteries
Honda has reached an agreement with battery developer SES (formerly SolidEnergy Systems) to jointly develop lithium metal batteries for electric vehicles. Honda also plans to acquire about two per cent of the battery developer’s shares as part of SES’s planned initial public offering.
