Autonomous-Nissan-LeafAutonomous Leaf: Nissan tests its Piloted Drive 1.0 with three “intelligent” Leaf at the firm’s Advanced Technology Center near Tokio. Each test EV is equipped with almost 400 autonomous drive sensors. The first version of the Leaf with the new technologies will be available in Japan by the end of 2016.

Energy storage from EV batteries: Daimler Accumotive, The Mobility House and GETEC are working on a 13MW-battery in German Lünen that re-uses old EV batteries to store energy. The joint venture requires 650 electric car batteries with 20 kWh each to realise the project.

E-Trucks made in Germany: Starting in 2016, Framo GmbH from Saxony will produce battery-electric commercial vehicles with a gross vehicle mass of 12 to 26 tonnes. The modular drive and battery concept allows customer to choose from motors between 140 kW and 310 kW and battery capacities between 60 and 307 kWh. Framo recently presented the E180 / 280 electric truck.

Green shipping in Norway: The “Green Coastal Shipping Program” by the Norwegian government and DNV GL aims to create the world’s most environmentally-friendly vessels. Five pilot projects, that involve a tanker, a plug-in hybrid ferry and a port, use LNG and batteries as energy sources to drive the boats.

Accumotive takes on Li-Tec employees: Daimler subsidiary Deutsche Accumotive wants to expand its production capacity of battery systems by hiring some 140 people, of which most are former Li-Tec employees. There, battery cell production will be stopped by the end of the year (we reported).

Pure energy efficiency: Sunday was the last day of the Shell Eco-Marathon Americas 2015. Mater Dei High School took first place in the category of battery electric vehicles, demonstrating an energy efficiency of 724 km/kWh. Wheat Ridge High School won in the hydrogen category with 244 km/m3.

E-ticket to space: Rocket Lab has developed an all-electric rocket to allow commercial launches of small satellites to space from anywhere. The Electron is powered by the Rutherford engine, featuring electric motors and Li-polymer batteries to power the turbopumps.

deutsche-accumotiveDaimler increases battery production: Despite closing down its production of lithium cells, the carmaker is expanding production capacities for complete battery systems in Kamenz, Germany. Daimler is investing 100 million euros (125m USD) in its Deutsche ACCUmotive subsidiary, saying the business is competitive and profitable. A third production hall will be completed mid-2015.

Hybrid electric motorcycle: Researchers of the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan have developed a battery-powered motorcycle that also features a fuel cell and hydrogen tank. The hybrid electric bike called “Fei Ma (Pegasus) No.1” just concluded its maiden voyage.

Rally Peugeot electrified: Stohl Racing presented its newly developed EV as part of the programme “rally-e.” The Peugeot 207 S2000 features two electric motors, allowing for a proud 400 kW and 880 Nm of torque. The car can go from zero to 100 km/h in just three seconds and features a battery that can be changed in under five minutes with a specially developed trailer mounted lift.

Emission hybrid: The Japanese company YGK has developed the EER (exhaust energy recovery) hybrid system, which turns a turbine with exhaust gas coming from the engine and generates electricity to power a motor and assist the engine. The system allegedly cuts fuel consumption by around ten percent and was tested in a Jaguar XJR-15 from the early 90s.
