General Motors reveal new battery system and platform

At an “EV Day” for investors, General Motors CEO Mary Barra presented an overview of the Group’s ambitious electric strategy. At the heart of the strategy is the third-generation new platform involving a modular battery system called Ultium. The platform should base the spectrum of electric vehicles from hatchbacks to pickups, SUVs and commercial vehicles.

GM to begin upgrading Detroit factory in March

Preparations for the conversion of the Detroit-Hamtramck production facility into a pure electric car plant, announced by General Motors at the end of January, will begin in March. There are also reports of concrete subsidies for the planned GM battery factory in Ohio.

Chevrolet launches Menlo EV sales in China

Chevrolet has started selling its first all-electric model on the Chinese market. The Menlo EV is a fully electric SUV with a NEDC range of up to 410 kilometers and is available at prices starting at 159,900 yuan (approx. 21,000 euros) after the government subsidy.

General Motors confirms electric Hummer

The electro-revival of the Hummer brand is official. The General Motors subsidiary GMC has now confirmed the rumours and has given the first key data of the GMC Hummer EV. A 30-second spot during the Super Bowl is set, and GM will fully unveil the monster EV in May 2020.

Lordstown Motors aims for state support

The US-American startup Lordstown Motors is hoping for a 200 million dollar loan from the US Department of Energy’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing program, from which Tesla, among others, has benefited from in the past. A drivable prototype of the electric pickup will be presented in June.

Tesla launches Shanghai Model 3 deliveries

Tesla has started deliveries of the first Model 3s produced in the Shanghai plant to customers. The first 15 vehicles were handed over to Tesla employees during a special event. According to a Reuters report, regular customers will also receive their vehicles from 7 January onwards.

Korea: Former GM factory picked up by MS Autotech

A former General Motors car factory in the South Korean city of Gunsan is to become a production site for electric cars. The Korean component manufacturer MS Autotech bought the plant for the equivalent of almost 100 million dollars to manufacture on behalf of several OEMs.
