Volkswagen refuses to commit to 2030 ICE phase out

Volkswagen is the third car manufacturer to defend itself against the demand of environmental associations for a forced phase-out of internal combustion engines by 2030. “Volkswagen will not issue the cease-and-desist declaration you demand,” reads a letter from Volkswagen to Greenpeace.

EU Commission wants to tighten car CO2 limits

The EU Commission apparently wants to tighten the CO2 limits for cars again. A media report, citing an internal paper, writes that new cars are to emit an average of 50 per cent less CO2 by 2030 compared to 2021. The current official target is set at 37.5 per cent less CO2.

Diesel blockade.

Greenpeace activist have boarded a ship carrying Volkswagen diesel vehicles in an attempt to stop them from being delivered to the UK. The block failed, but the Rainbow Warriors managed to call on Volkswagen to go fully electric. VW pointed out that there were 37 PHEV aboard the ship, so we took this occasion to reminisce on Greenpeace’s Dark side campaign back in 2011 and found a somewhat sexy sequel.

Research tip: Price parity for electric and petrol cars over a four-year running period may be reached by 2024, the European Consumer Organisation, BEUC finds. The organisation also sees it likely for EVs to become even cheaper to run than gas guzzlers.

Study tip: The investment necessary to move toward 100 percent renewable energy by 2050 would be more than covered by future savings in fuel costs, according to a new study conducted by Greenpeace and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). “The Energy [R]evolution scenario 2015” also says that a total of 17.5m jobs in the solar and wind power industry could be created by 2030.
