Jean Todt, Michael Manly.

Jean-Todt“I’m convinced that hydrogen will be a technology that will be used in the future.”

FIA president Jean Todt predicts technologies like hydrogen electric race cars and autonomous functionalities to enter racing rather sooner than later. The zero car may make the start as it could be autonomous within 5 years time, according to Todt.

Michael-Manly“A full battery-electric-vehicle Wrangler is not relevant. We can’t strand one of our vehicles on a remote mountain side.”

Jeep CEO Michael Manly said his company will introduce hybrid variants of many of its models but considers all-electric vehicles not fit for purpose.

Padmasree Warrior, Jean Todt, Michael Steiner.

Padmasree-Warrior“I give Tesla and Tesla CEO Elon Musk a lot of credit for really bringing the EV back. It was literally dead before Tesla made it a serious product.”

Padmasree Warrior, CEO of NextEV’s U.S. division, would love to sit down with Elon Musk to learn more about his experiences. But as NextEV sees itself as a digital company, it does say it will push transportation in the digital age even further.

Jean-Todt“We want Formula E to be a visionary championship. We want to highlight how our racing cars will be, not in two years but in 20 years, so that it is kind of a laboratory for motor racing.”

FIA President Jean Todt says the electric racing series is like a lab for EV technology. And in season five of the Formula E, he wants to show that they were able to double autonomy since the beginning.

Michael-Steiner“A 911 hybrid? It’s possible, yes. It’s possible to have 918-derived technology in a 911. It’s possible with today’s technology in a 911. However, there is no decision to do this on short notice, but we have this constantly on our radar.”

Michael Steiner, Porsche executive board member for research and development, doesn’t lose sight of electrification. But an electrified 911 is not in the pipeline.

Elon Musk, Jean Todt, Li Bin.

Elon-Musk-Twitter“100,000 would have been an impressive number. Now, with some 400,000 pre-orders, the number is almost unbelievable. […] The Model 3 was probably the real wake up call for the rest of the industry.”

During a visit to Norway, Tesla CEO Elon Musk suggests the Model 3 reservation bonanza isn’t just great for his company, but for the automotive industry.

Jean-Todt“We talk a lot about pollution, CO2, climate change, and we have to take that into consideration when we discuss regulations for ongoing championships.”

FIA president Jean Todt doesn’t think it’s just consumer vehicles that need a fuel upgrade, but also race cars.

anonym“Our goal is to build a high-end, high-performance electric car for half the price of a Tesla car.”

NextEV doesn’t yet have a car to sell, but co-founder Li Bin expects the internet-focused company to roll out cars that traditional automakers cannot match.

Jeff Wyatt, Matthew Warren, Jean Todt.

Jeff-Wyatt“We think we can be a sizable player within it, and that’s really what we’re intending to do.”

Jeff Wyatt, GE’s general manager for energy storage, talks about General Electric’s plans to increase its business for energy storage solutions on a big scale, as it expects the sector to quadruple to 6 billion dollars by 2020.

Matthew-Warren“Once there is a critical mass in the domestic market for alternative fuel vehicles it will bring down costs, support widespread development of charging stations, increase the level of after-sales support and create a re-sale market that will encourage more drivers to buy one.”

Matthew Warren is CEO of the Energy Supply Association of Australia, which urges the Australian government to support EV uptake. The organisation estimates that low cost incentives could help to bring 1 million EVs on the roads in ten years.

Jean-Todt“A lot of people compare it to any other category, but there’s nothing to compare, its just a series with its own characteristics. I’m happy that we have been achieving things that are amazing.”

FIA president Jean Todt on comparing the Formula E and the Formula 1, which he would like to be seen as separate entities.

Rim Chun-taek, Jean Todt, Elon Musk.

Chun-Taek-Rim“Wireless electric cars, whether the technology is used to recharge parked cars or cars being driven, will facilitate the commercialization of electric cars. The technology is already the most promising solution, and it is expected to grow even more popular as battery capacity and price competitiveness improve. With this in mind, the government needs to update its policies.”

Professor Rim Chun-taek from the Korea Advanced Institute of Technollogy (KAIST) is calling for investments in inductive charging technology rather than in nowadays chargers with cords, esp. as the latter could be redundant soon.

Jean-Todt“For me the electric car is really the future of motoring in the cities.”

FIA president Jean Todt speaking on his vision behind the Formula E and the responsibility for the future of motoring be it in races or cities.

Elon-Musk“I think our stock price is kind of high right now to be totally honest. If you care about the long term, I think the stock is a good price. If you look at the short term, it is less clear.”

Even Tesla CEO Elon Musk must admit that his company might be slightly overrated at the stock market – at least for now. After his comment, stock prices fell by 4.5%.
