Since 2016, the Los Angeles Police Department has received 100 BMW i3s each year. However, the older i3s with a 22-kWh battery and no range extender seem to have insufficient range for police operations.

The Los Angeles Police Department has had a quirky addition to their fleet of patrol vehicles as they acquire 20 electric bikes. They have been specifically designed for the force and assist officers up to a speed of 28 mph (45 kph).

Ultra-fast charging at 350 kW: An ultra-fast EV charging network is to go up in Europe through the ‘Ultra-E’ EU pilot project. 25 stations with CCS connection delivering up to 350 kW will stretch along the TEN-T corridors that run through Germany, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands from 2018. Current electric cars will charge at 50 kW. Audi, BMW, Renault, Hubject, Allego and Smatrics are on board.

EV charge network for NYC: The New York Power Authority has made 300 locations available for the installation of EV charging stations by local governments. Technology will be provided at low cost by the state authority via ChargeNY. The scheme targets 3,000 stations by 2018 and has realised 50% so far.

BMW preferred over Tesla: The LAPD has decided to lease 100 BMW i3 after it has been testing various EV over a year, reportedly including Tesla. The Model S had proven too expensive for the police force. The i3 will be charged at 100 EV charging stations by Greenlots and four rapid charging stops. The city of Los Angeles is looking to acquire 100 more electric cars of hitherto unknown make this year.

Fleet electrification: The German city of Dortmund intends to replace half of its fleet of 100 cars and 200 vans with electric vehicles by 2020. Currently, there are 13 electric cars, 10 pedelecs, and 8 electric vans in operation and another 10 light utility EV shall be acquired this year. All can be charged at Dortmund’s 100 charging stations. In fall, the hospital will start a pilot renting EV to staff.

Routing recharged: Scottish Route Monkey received 285,000 GBP to create an online portal and app for EV drivers. The tool will point out the best route for electric cars as it takes into account available charging points, driving conditions, charge time, and the battery’s state-of-charge.

Vietnam’s cabs electrified: Vietnamese Ho Huy seeks to set up a taxi service with 10,000 electric cabs. Vietnam’s second largest cab operator, Mai Linh Taxi, recently announced it would replace its 20,000 strong fleet with EVs by 2020. If both plans succeed, soon more than half of all the country’s 50,000 taxis could be electric.

Montreal on a mission: The Canadian city pursues a programme to introduce a 1,000 EVs to share by 2020. For starter, control over parking lots with EV charging stations will be transferred from the districts to the city, enabling electric carsharing to flow freely. Around 50 such park and charge spots shall go up next month with a further 1,000 due by 2020. The measures include pure EV zones to be designated in downtown Montreal by the end of the decade.

Future ready: Canada confirms its EV and FCV infrastructure policy as it intends to spend 62.5m dollars. 16.4m dollars have been earmarked for rapid charging, hydrogen and natural gas units. Another 46.1m dollars to be invested in “next generation” infrastructure, i.e. wireless and even faster charge spots.

Electric bus fleet: COMO Connect has been testing a BYD electric bus. Successfully, it seems, as the firm from Columbia, Missouri, now purchased three all-electric transit buses, which are due to go into operation next month. Range is given at 144 miles, while charging takes two to three hours.

Uber goes green: Since the beginning of the week, Uber users in Johannesburg can hail a BMW i3 or Nissan Leaf when choosing the UberGreen option in the app. The company is testing its UberGreen service until June 3rd during daytime and is working with both carmakers.
