Good year for South Korean battery production

South Korean electric vehicle battery manufacturers more than doubled their market share between January and July 2020. In general, the market contracted by 16.8 per cent from 64.1 to 53.3 GWh capacity during the first seven months of the year due to corona.

Volvo launches battery assembly in Ghent

Volvo Cars has inaugurated a battery assembly line at its Belgian production site in Ghent. Batteries for the XC40 Recharge P8 will start rolling off assembly lines at the Ghent plant from March, while the production of the first electric Volvo is also scheduled to start in Ghent in the autumn.

The US Trade Commission (ITC) has given a preliminary ruling on the legal dispute between the two South Korean battery manufacturers LG Chem and SK Innovation in the USA. The ITC has ruled in favour of LG Chem, and a final decision is expected by 5 October.

Jaguar is suspending production of its electric SUV I-Pace in Graz, Austria this week due to battery cell supply problems. The British firm gets its batteries from the LG Chem plant in Poland. Mercedes is also suffering from lack of battery cells among other issues.

LG Chem & CATL to supply Tesla’s batteries in China

The Chinese battery cell manufacturer CATL has confirmed that it has signed a supply contract with Tesla. The final purchase volume for battery cells between July 2020 and June 2022 is to be determined at a later date based on actual orders.
