SK Innovation & LG Energy Solution settle US legal battle

South Korean battery cell manufacturers SK Innovation and LG Energy Solution have reached a settlement in their year-long legal dispute. Both companies agreed to stop all legal proceedings in the US and South Korea and to refrain from suing each other for the next ten years.

LG aims for 110 GWh cell production in the USA by 2025

The South Korean battery cell manufacturer LG Energy Solution has announced that it will invest more than 4.5 billion US dollars (just under 3.8 billion euros) by 2025 to expand its production capacities in the USA by 70 GWh to 110 GWh. At least two new factories are planned.

LG Chem completes battery spin-off

LG Chem has now officially completed the spin-off of its battery division. The new company is apparently also going to significantly increase the production of battery cells for Tesla, which will include Giga Berlin in Germany.

LG Chem ready to do away with battery modules

LG Chem has completed the development of its Module Pack Integrated Platform (MPI). With the new platform, the battery specialist is pursuing a similar approach to CATL with its cell-to-pack battery whereby the cells are integrated directly into the battery pack instead of first being built into modules.

LG Chem may supply cells for Tesla China Model Y

According to Chinese media reports, Tesla has signed a contract with LG Chem to supply battery cells for the Model Y made in China. Specifically, LG Chem will supply NMC cells for the Long Range and Performance versions of Tesla’s midsize SUV.

South Korean electric vehicle battery manufacturers more than doubled their market share between January and July 2020. In general, the market contracted by 16.8 per cent from 64.1 to 53.3 GWh capacity during the first seven months of the year due to corona.

Volvo launches battery assembly in Ghent

Volvo Cars has inaugurated a battery assembly line at its Belgian production site in Ghent. Batteries for the XC40 Recharge P8 will start rolling off assembly lines at the Ghent plant from March, while the production of the first electric Volvo is also scheduled to start in Ghent in the autumn.

The US Trade Commission (ITC) has given a preliminary ruling on the legal dispute between the two South Korean battery manufacturers LG Chem and SK Innovation in the USA. The ITC has ruled in favour of LG Chem, and a final decision is expected by 5 October.
