Mercedes & Geely joint venture for Smart ready to go

The China joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely around Smart announced at the end of March last year has now been formally established with all relevant final approvals from Chinese authorities. The first electric Smart cars made in China are to be launched on the market in 2022.

Daimler working on cooperation with Geely

Daimler is currently evaluating cooperation options with the Chinese Geely. They are analyzing potentially releasing an EV platform, among other things, which could be sold to other manufacturers.

Geely now largest shareholder of Daimler

China’s Geely has bought almost ten percent in Daimler shares, thus becoming the company’s largest shareholder. Geely founder Li Shufu said in a statement he is “particularly pleased to accompany Daimler on its way to becoming the world’s leading electro-mobility provider.”

Geely CEO, Li Shufu, is urging the Chinese government to deregulate the market, saying it would be “fair” and might help the industry to “develop better.”
