Tesla moves to launch cell production in Grünheide by 2022

Tesla wants to submit the application for approval for the production of battery cells in Grünheide to German authorities by July of this year at the latest. According to the corresponding media report, the production start for the cells in Grünheide is targeted for 2022.

Tesla has started production of the Model Y in Shanghai. A drone video shows around 40 units of the Model Y in a parking lot of the plant. Elon Musk indirectly confirmed the start of production on Twitter and wrote that he plans to travel to Shanghai in January, possibly for delivery launch.

Tesla appears to be planning a production facility for chargers near its car factory in Shanghai. Over in Europe, the prices for the Model S and Model X have been increased, while in the USA the Model X and some Model Y will have to go to the workshop for a recall.

Tesla has begun hiring staff for battery cell production at Giga Berlin in Grünheide. Reports say the company would also look to finding personnel in vehicle assembly starting in January. Up to 7,000 employees would then help build a slightly modified Model Y for the markets in Europe.

Elon Musk has revealed more details about Tesla’s plans for the upcoming factory in Germany, which is to become a testbed for the Fremont and Shanghai factories. Giga Berlin will be using the new 4680 format batteries as well as a completely new cast frame, which is not without risks.

Tesla is apparently preparing some upgrades for the Model 3 – at least as far as the version produced in China is concerned. Besides a reworked frunk and steering wheel as well as an electric tailgate, there are some indications that the electric sedan will also get a heat pump.

Tesla Giga Berlin & Giga Texas well underway

The Gigafactories under construction in Texas and Berlin have been making progress despite the final permit for the site in Grünheide, close to the German capital still pending. Brandenburg state minister Jörg Steinbach is confident however to be able to grant final permissions before the year’s end.
