Since Seat decided to get into electrification of their performance segment, they found a powerful partner. Croatia’s super car maker Rimac Automobili will drive the technology behind the Cupra e-Racer in order to “introduce a whole new E TCR category,” says CEO Mate Rimac.

Seat Leon to be released as PHEV in 2020

Seat made the announcement as part of their annual presentation for the 2017 results in Madrid, stating that the plug-in hybrid version of the vehicle would be released on the market in 2020.  It will be manufactured in the Spanish Martorell factory.

Aston Martin to limit RapidE: The British want to manufacture no more than 155 units of its all-electric RapidE from 2019. That is just one third of the amount announced initially. The reason is that Aston Martin quit its partnership (for this electric model) with Chinese company Le Eco due to the latter’s financial problems. Pre-orders with a down payment of 10 percent of the total 200,000 pounds shall be possible from August. The electric version of Aston Martin’s DBX is supposed to enter the market by 2019.

Renault-Kangoo-ZE-2015Pricing for Renault’s electric Kangoo: In Germany, net prices for the new Kangoo Z.E. with its 33 kWh battery start at 20,820 euros, the cheapest long version Kangoo Maxi is available for 22,820. For the first time, the French offer the battery for sale rather than lease only with its EV.

Seat to electrify its Cupra: The Spanish intend to create electric versions of its performance models called Cupra. So far, the Seat Leon is the only one existing as well in a Cupra version, but in 2018 an Ateca Cupra is to follow. Seat’s first EV model based on the MEB platform is due by 2019.

No electrification of Kia’s Stonic: The Korean car manufacturer denies rumours claiming an electric twin of its compact crossover Stonic at launch. Marketing head Seo Bo-won stated that there won’t be a hybrid version neither. The explanation is that Kia seeks to delineate the Stonic from the Niro.

BMW extends its U.S. factory: The Germans want to invest 600m dollars in Spartanburg, South Carolina and create 1,000 jobs over the next four years, BMW announced during its X3 model presentation. It seems likely, the planned X3 electric version will be made in Spartanburg from 2019, too.

Tesla has removed restrictions of its Autosteer. The speed limit for handsfree driving (in theory) on highways climbs to 145 kph, up from 128 kph. Off highway, the update replaces the 56 kph limit with an adaptive system keeping pace at 8 kph above the official speed limit, or at 72 kph when there is none.

India to progress electrification: There shall be no more vehicles with combustion engines on India’s road comes 2030 but EVs only. Plans have now been brought forward in order to reach this objective. An influential government think-tank suggests a set of measures which includes lower taxes and interest rates for loans on EVs, limited registration of conventional cars similar to China, re-investment of tax revenues from the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles into EV charging stations and the installation of a battery factory next year by the government. The report further favours EVs over HEVs, whose subsidies would be discontinued.

iNext to be made in Germany: BMW decided to manufacture its first autonomous EV in the company’s very own backyard in Lower Bavaria, or Dingolfing to be exact. The idea is to keep production close to its HQ that concentrates tech and development competence in Munich. Just a few weeks ago, BMW announced the creation a new R&D centre for autonomous driving in the north of the city but will also work on the iNext drivetrain here. The iNext is scheduled to roll off the lines by 2021, while production of other i-models will remain in Leipzig, Saxony.

GM to make EVs profitable? General Motors wants to be the first carmaker to enter the EV profit zone by making electric cars more affordable. Hence, the company’s engineers seek to make batteries less heavy and more efficient, says GM executive Mark Reuss. Coupled with the earlier announced strategy to substantially increase production output especially in China, where GM intends to introduce 10 electrified models by 2020, battery costs could significantly decline indeed.

Range is relative as it is highly dependent on the test cycle. Nissan obviously uses the Japanese JC08 standard that is among the most optimistic and gives the next-gen Leaf 350 to 400km. By 2020, Nissan intends to launch a comparable model with 550 km range that may reach 450 – 500km in Europe.

3D printed EV in New Zealand: The Drop is the name of a three-wheeled electric car that shall come out of a 3D-printer in New Zealand. With 300 km range and a price around 10,000 dollars, its creator Ira Munn addresses commuters. His endeavour is supported by tech charity Accelerating Aotearoa and Massey University. Together, they hope to present a prototype in August and “print” serially by March 2018.

Seat EV becomes concrete: The first all-electric car in Seat’s line-up will either be an electrified Mii minicar or Leon compact, CEO Luda de Meo now confirmed earlier guesses. The model is due by 2019, one year before Seat wants to produce its first EV utilising VW’s common MEB platform.

Hyundai prices Ioniq in Canada: The hybrid version of the Ioniq starts at 24,299 dollars, whereas the EV version costs 35,649 USD. While the HEV will be available throughout Canada, the Ioniq EV will only be offered in provinces with EV rebates, namely Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia.

Mercedes accelerates electric car roll-out: The premium segment is under pressure since diesel’s dirty secret has been aired, emission rules become ever tighter, and Tesla writes record after record and so Daimler reacts. 10 EVs by 2022 is the latest target – that is 3 years earlier than initially planned in Paris. On Wednesday’s annual conference in Berlin, CEO Dieter Zetsche also announced, he would invest 10bn euros in order to expand the electric lineup under the EQ label that shall cover every segment from compact to luxury. High-level lobbying: Initially, China wanted to force automakers to shift 8 percent of their production to electric and hybrid vehicles in 2018. This may now be moved to 2019 and the percentage possibly lowered. Germany had followed complaints by makers like Volkswagen, whose electrification remains slow but was echoed by Chinese manufacturers. Details of the new rules are currently being worked out in China.

Mini to leave Britain? As a “hard Brexit” becomes more likely, BMW ponders to move production of the electric Mini from Oxford to Leipzig or Regensburg, Handelsblatt has learnt. The Germans may also tap Dutch Nedcar, which already builds two Mini models for BMW.

E-SUV by Bentley: The British luxury brand sees a market for a smaller SUV just below the Bentayga and considers making it all-electric, according to head of technology Rolf Frech. But such a Bentley EV would kick off no sooner than by 2020 and only after planned PHEV variants.

Tesla and FF appoint new CFOs: Tesla’s CFO Jason Wheeler will abandon his post in April to be replaced by former CFO Deepak Ahuja. Wheeler is off to work on public policies, a bold move in the current political climate. Over at Faraday Future, Stefan Krause, former executive at BMW and Deutsche Bank, is to take care of finances at the new EV maker and will have a lot to sort out.

Prices start at 21,940 and 22,600 euros before incentives. The new Smart Fortwo ED convertible will hit the market this summer, while autumn will see the introduction of fast-charging at 22 kW.

Seat is moving swiftly on electrification as it plans to present an EV prototype at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next Monday. The electric model that may be a Mii shall serve in a car sharing pilot project for Seat employees in the Catalan capital.

Range Rover PHEV(s) in Geneva: Jaguar Land Rover published the first official picture that shows the Range Rover Velar SUV due to debut at the Geneva Auto Show. A plug-in hybrid variant is likely. Not official but photos nonetheless emerged of the Range Rover PHEV that will go on sale next year.

LaFerrari special edition? Patent drawings hint at an anniversary model, created by Ferrari’s Special Projects division. It primed the familiar LaFerrari shape but with futuristic styling elements such as thin headlights and larger air intakes.

Electric Ariel Atom: Honda filed a patent for a minimalistic sports car that resembles the 2015 concept Ariel Atom. It looks as if the racer will have an electric drive.

Full autonomy for all: Elon Musk revealed the “unexpected,” saying that all new Tesla will have the hardware for autonomous driving (level 5) and that a fully auotnomous trip from i.e. LA to New York will be possible by the end of next year. The upgrade includes a total of eight cameras, better ultrasonic sensors that let the car “see” as far as 500 metres, and a 40 times more powerful onboard computer. To use it, drivers will need to pay an extra 8,000 dollars, or 5,000 dollars for a four-camera option.

Eco quota in Korea? South Korea’s government may introduce a supply quota for EV and PHEV to force domestic carmakers to sell more of their eco-friendly models at home. Currently, Hyundai and Co. prioritise deliveries to markets overseas due to subsidies.

Ssangyong in China: Together with Shaanxi Automobile Group the Korean founded a JV to build cars in China. A new facility is planned for 2019, where electric cars for the Chinese market are to be produced under a separate label.

As good as new: Nissan started its used Leaf campaign that offers financing and warranties in the UK. A 2nd hand Nissan EV with 24 kWh battery is available from 175 GBP per month and includes home charging as well as free fast-charging three times a week.

Nikola-OnePower of ideas: Another Tesla-inspired U.S. company opens the order books for its first electric vehicles. Nikola Motor will launch a 1,500 kW electric truck called Nikola One, and a 382 kW electric quad with the code name Nikola Zero. The truck’s 320 kWh battery is charged via a gas turbine, while the four-seater’s battery is said to last for 125 miles. First working prototypes are to be shown later this year.

More electric trucks come from BYD that just presented a full range of heavy-duty electric vehicles with four new types. The T5, T7, T9, and the Step Van deliver ranges from 100 – 155 miles on one charge and feature V2G functionality, as well as regenerative braking. They will be produced in Lancaster, California, and can be used for i.e. hauling, freezing, and mail delivery.

Made in Austria: Toyota and BMW will have Magna build their joint hybrid sports car from 2018, Austrian Kleine Zeitung reports. 60,000 units of the Z4 successor (aka Supra) will be produced in Graz. Toyota is Magna’s first Asian customer and the Japanese will reportedly deliver the 400 hp hybrid system.

State-build EV: FDG Electric Vehicles has entered into a cooperation agreement with Chinese Guizhou province. In a joint venture, they are to construct a production facility designed to annually build up to 150,000 electric vehicles annually. The project costs about 170m dollars but no timeline has been published.

Seat unplugged: There will be no hybrid or electric models in the line-up of VW’s Spanish subsidiary anytime soon. Despite the technology being readily available within the corporation, Seat believes it to be too expensive for its youthful target group. The argument seems anachronistic.

Seat slow to electrify: The VW subsidiary is not looking to build plug-in hybrids or electric cars before 2020, despite having access to Volkswagen technology. Seat CEO Jürgen Stackmann says that prices will need to come down first. However, Seat will have to electrify by 2020-2025, as EU regulation will leave it no choice.

Peugeot-Citroën plans new flagship: PSA’s subsidiary DS will introduce a new sedan by 2018. It currently runs under the project name ‘DS8’ and will first be made available in China. A hybrid variant is planned as well.

BMW i3 to become the iCar? The Bavarians are talking to Apple about a possible cooperation, German Auto Motor und Sport reports. Apparently, the i3 could become the Apple EV, or both companies could develop a new car altogether. Thermal management: Dana Holding Corporation has developed a new aluminum cooling technology for electric and hybrid vehicles to limit the maximum temperature of the insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) junction. Production of the aluminum cooling plates is set to start in early 2015.
