Is VW planning an electric Scirocco for 2028?

VW is reportedly considering a comeback of the Scirocco as an electric car. According to a British media report, VW is working internally on a corresponding model - as part of a larger project with several Group brands, including Audi and Porsche.

As Autocar reports, citing an insider, the electric Scirocco is part of a project for a total of four electric sports cars, which also includes the fourth-generation Porsche Boxster/Cayman, the production version of the Cupra Dark Rebel and a fourth-generation Audi TT. The basis is to be a specially adapted version of the PPE platform.

The Scirocco was a compact sports coupé derived from the VW Golf that has been on the market since 1974 (with interruptions). The third generation (2008-2017) was still based on the Golf VI, which was also known as the PQ35 platform, and not yet on the modular transverse matrix (MQB) like the Golf generations VII and the current VIII. This is also not the first time that there has been speculation about an electric future for the sports coupé: Back in 2017, there were reports that VW was planning an electric coupé with this name based on the MEB – but this never came to market.

If the electric VW Scirocco gets the green light for realisation, it could come onto the market in 2028, according to Autocar. If this were to happen, the Scirocco would probably no longer be derived from the Golf or its electric counterpart, the MEB-based ID.3. There are concrete rumours that Volkswagen will phase out the ID.3 after one generation and then replace the recently updated Golf with a purely electric model – possibly called the ID. Golf – will then replace it.

However, such an electric Golf is likely to be based on the Group’s upcoming SSP architecture. The PPE, or ‘Premium Platform Electric’, is intended for the Group’s premium brands. A possible electric Scirocco would therefore be positioned a good deal higher than the previous model generations.

Autocar also appears to be thinking along these lines, as the rendering created by the editorial graphics department shows a very dynamic vehicle. The proportions are strongly reminiscent of a Porsche Boxster/Cayman, which is not surprising given the potential relationship. However, there is little to be seen of a Golf on the vehicle.

Incidentally, even though numerous prototypes of the upcoming Porsche sports cars have already been photographed during test drives – with a charging connection at the rear – there is hardly any confirmed information on the technology of the adapted PPE. Autocar assumes that different wheelbases and track widths will be possible for the respective models – as well as drive systems with one or two electric motors. The battery will not be installed in the underbody, but in a T-shape in the centre tunnel and behind the interior to create a flat body.
