UBS disassembles & analyzes ID.3

UBS analysts have disassembled a VW ID.3 and come to the conclusion that the MEB platform is “fully competitive” with Tesla in terms of cost. VW achieves “first-class energy density, efficiency and scalability”. That being said, when it comes to the battery and its costs, Tesla remains ahead.

Tesla electric car batteries ahead of the pack

Analysts from UBS teamed up with engineers to figure out which electric vehicle batteries made by established manufacturers offer the best value. They concluded that cells made by Panasonic in Tesla’s Gigafactory are 20 per cent more cost efficient than the next best on offer from LG Chem.

ZF spins off blockchain-based Car eWallet

ZF has founded a startup that incorporates their Car eWallet business. They will offer payment and billing services for transactions such as charging or renting electric cars using blockchain technology. The launch of Car eWallet in Berlin follows a trial with project partners IBM and UBS.

UBS-Logo“We think that by 2020, shrinking battery and solar cost will make EVs in the mass segments the cheaper alternative over a car life cycle in most European markets.”

A report by investment bank UBS sees the use of renewable energy growing and battery prices dropping. By 2020, the combination of EV, solar and storage will therefore deliver a payback time of six to eight years.

Renovo CEO Christopher Heiser explains why the start-up stopped short of announcing its plans before they had a vehicle to show for. He says Renovo wanted to make sure to live up to its promise and that it has (hopefully) learned from other carmaker’s mistakes.
