LG Chem CEO Prabhakar Patil is confident that the market for Li-ion batteries will grow due to large energy storage installations and the automotive sector. The Gigafactory alone will produce more storage capacity than the consumer market counts today.
“When the battery for own use will be cheaper, this technology can be quite a serious challenge for the classic model of utilities.”
U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz praises Tesla’s energy storage device for the home, but believes that the cost of production still needs to be reduced to make this technology viable in the future.
