Norbert-Reithofer“The ball is now in the court of policy-makers who will determine how quickly e-mobility is going to advance.”

Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW said during his farewell address at the General Meeting last week, adding that the company will (or should) continue to embrace new technologies because “change is the new normal.”

Prabhakar-Patil“I think by the 2020 time frame, the automotive market will match or maybe be bigger than consumer electronics.”

LG Chem CEO Prabhakar Patil is confident that the market for Li-ion batteries will grow due to large energy storage installations and the automotive sector. The Gigafactory alone will produce more storage capacity than the consumer market counts today.

Ernest-Moniz“When the battery for own use will be cheaper, this technology can be quite a serious challenge for the classic model of utilities.”

U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz praises Tesla’s energy storage device for the home, but believes that the cost of production still needs to be reduced to make this technology viable in the future.

Carlos Ghosn, Prabhakar Patil.

Carlos-Ghosn“As long as you don’t have charging infrastructure, you know, we’re not going to see a very strong development of the electric car. And the countries which are going to have this charging infrastructure are going to see a very big burst of zero-emission vehicles.”

Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn does not believe that current EV technology is holding back sales of electric cars. Instead, he calls for more charging infrastructure to make electric cars more practicable for drivers.

Prabhakar-Patil“It will drive up the volume in the industry for materials, and that will lower costs for everybody.”

Prabhakar Patil, CEO of LG Chem, says that the Tesla Gigafactory will affect the whole EV market in a positive way and gives “a lot of credit” to the California carmaker for aiming to “to change the image of the electric vehicle and growing the volumes.”

This is the German government answering to a so-called brief enquiry by the Green Party regarding chancellor Angela Merkel’s thinking on electric cargo bikes and their potential to replace lorries for local freight transport.
