Dreamliner fire investigated: The fire on a Boeing Dreamliner parked at London-Heathrow in July 2013 was initiated by the uncontrolled release of stored energy from the lithium battery in the Emergency Locator Transmitter, according to Britain’s Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB). In its final report, the AAIB concludes that battery wires, crossed and trapped under the battery cover, “probably created a short-circuit current path which could allow a rapid, uncontrolled discharge of the battery”.

Efficient EV transmission: Evolute Drives says it will present practical test results for its high efficiency 3-speed MSYS electric vehicle transmission at the upcoming CTI Symposium in Shanghai. In independent tests, a B-class fitted with the transmission allegedly achieved a reduction in energy consumption of up to 18 percent over the NEDC test cycle, compared to the single-speed base vehicle.

3D printable electric scooter: Spanish designer Josep Bolart has unveiled Paolo, a minimalist electric scooter. It can be made from recycled materials and most of the parts could be 3D printed.

Battery research: A team from Chonnam National University and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology has developed a 3D nanoarchitecture of germanium coated with carbon for use as ultra-high rate anodes for Li-ion batteries. The composite is said to show “excellent cyclability”.
