Take Off: Hyperloop One premiered its propulsion technology on a test track close to Las Vegas. The motor sat on an open air sled and accelerated electromagnetically from 0 to 53 mph in a second. The test lasted two seconds in total and ended in a cloud of desert dust.

Geely to build batteries: The Chinese corporation now holds a 48 percent share in Shandong Forever New Energy worth 42m dollars. The battery maker is currently constructing a new factory, with the capacity to annually supply 80,000 EV with power packs. Shandong’s biggest customer is Hangzhou Kandi Electric Vehicles, a Geely and Kandi Tech joint venture.

Electric trucks: California Truck Equipment Company (CTEC) and Indiana-based Rockport Commercial Vehicles both offer electric versions of their existing commercial vehicles using Motiv Power Systems’ All-Electric Powertrain. The package includes batteries as well as charging hardware and power for hydraulics and the like. First models are in operation already.

EV emissions: Researchers at the University of Edinburgh find electric and hybrid vehicles as polluting as their petrol counterparts, but were looking at particulate matter (PM) emissions only. These PM are from non-exhaust sources like tire wear dust, brake pad dust, or tiny road particles.
