1,000 km range close? Fraunhofer IKTS and partners claim to have found a way to widen EV range towards the 1,000 km mark. The EMBATT project transferred the bipolar principle known from fuel cells to lithium batteries, meaning single cells are not packed side-by-side in small sections but stacked on top of each other across a large area. First lab tests showed promising results, says Fraunhofer.

Hyundai chose Chinese battery supplier: Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) is to become Hyundai’s first battery supplier in China. The company based in Fujian province will start with an order for Hyundai’s Sonata PHEV, which shall enter the Chinese market in the first half of 2018.

Roadster with fuel cell Rex: Ronn Motor Group wants to evolve its Scorpion into an electric roadster with hydrogen range extender. The model then called Phoenix may go for up to 600 miles (965 km). To make this happen, the Arizona-based company launched a Regulation A+ Mini-IPO that enables anyone to invest. In future, the EV platform shall also serve electric mini buses and trucks.

Lithium successors: The Novel Ionic Conductors project searches new materials for batteries. Scientists supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) now suggest to replace lithium with sodium and magnesium. Both substances could also make it into solid-state batteries.
