Modular electric drive: Engineering firm IAV brought its latest electric drive to a symposium in Vienna, Austria. The motor’s integrated planetary gear set offers up to three speeds, which can be adjusted for efficiency or hill-climbing ability. Constant power is at 50 kW with a max output of 80 kW and the electric drive is said to increase battery range by 5 – 10 percent. Target group are all sizes of cars and all sorts of low-emission vehicles including those with fuel cells.
UPS presents fuel cell truck: UPS is another logistic giant entering the zero emission business as maker rather than buyer and has just presented a custom-made electric delivery van. It uses a fuel cell from Hydrogenics as range extender and has been developed within a 10m dollar programme funded through the DOE. The van has a range of up to 200 km, says UPS, who wants to deploy a total of 17 units in a trial that runs through the end of 2018 in the USA.

More fuel cell utility vehicles come from Kenworth that operates in SoCal. Its prototype Class 8 hydrogen tractor uses a Ballard Power Systems fuel cell to recharge the battery. Another model under developent is a hybrid running on CNG. Both will be deployed in in Southern Californian ports.
And back to UPS who will give a start-up from Hamburg a chance to push its deliveries by bike. NÜWIEL’s electric pusher trailer has its own electric drive and could thus assist to thrust the postman forward. Its is said to sense the force needed and adds to up to 25 kph while carrying cargo of up to 90 kilos. NÜWIEL will be available to courier companies from autumn 2017 and to consumers by 2019.
