Toyota’s energy ambition: Together with Denso and Chubu Electric Power, Toyota has launched a “virtual power plant” demo project for the efficient use of renewable energy. Specifically, plug-in hybrid vehicles will link to heat pump water heaters, storage batteries and other items to control their charging times and to coordinate demand according to the supply from renewables. Set up in Toyota City in Japan, the demo will run until March 2020.

With a length of 111m each, the vessels will hold up to 120 (electric) cars and shall slip to sea from next year. They will serve Fjord 1 on the the Hareid-Sulesund and Magerholm-Sykkylven routes. Upon completion Fjord1’s fleet will have grown to 8 all-electric ferries according to our count.

Not ideal: To replace the Bolt EV’s battery would cost 15,734 dollar to date, equivalent to 262 $/kWh. Take this list price and GM’s initial cell calculation of 145 $/kWh and you arrive at cost of 196.50 dollars per kWh with 51.50$/KWh at the pack level costs.
