Recall of all BMW i3 in the United States

German carmaker BMW has announced a stop-sale and recall on all BMW i3’s sold in the States. This affects all-electric models as well as i3 versions with range extender – all in all approximately 30,000 units.

The reason for this measures are crash tests led by the NHTSA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. These tests proved that persons of a certain body size that do not wear a seatbelt have a marginally higher risk of neck injuries than is allowed in case of a frontal collision. Although in the States it is mandatory to wear seatbelts (except of New Hampshire), obviously there are still minimum requirements to fulfil for persons ignoring this obligation.
