Lightning eMotors trucks to help Ikea deliver in Manhattan

Lightning eMotors says it received an order from Fluid Truck over another 40 electric delivery trucks for its New York City fleet. These vehicles will support Ikea’s US operations on the last-mile through third-party service suppliers.

Fluid Truck is a network system that is among the largest clients of Lightning eMotors. Fluid already runs ten electric delivery box trucks from Lightning eMotors in Manhattan alone. An additional 30 vehicles will be deployed over the next few months, the company announced.

The new trucks on order will go to XPO Logistics and NAL Group to support Ikea operations in New York City. The companies are renting the vehicles via the Fluid Truck rental platform.

“XPO Logistics, NAL Group and Fluid Truck are truly innovating by not only making deliveries more sustainable by using zero-emission trucks but also by significantly reducing the cost of deliveries,” said Tim Reeser, CEO of Lightning eMotors.

From the base on Staten Island, the trucks will deliver products to all five New York City boroughs. They feature 129 kWh of battery capacity with a range of 120 miles, according to Lightning, and can be charged in just under two hours by an 80-kW onboard DC fast charger. The chassis comes from Ford.

However, the New York fleet is only part of much larger order. Fluid Truck is the process of incorporating 600 Lightning Electric vehicles onto their platform, rolling out the vehicles to several cities throughout the United States. Users can book vehicles through the Fluid Truck website or their mobile application.

Lightning eMotors also announced it was in the process of closing a definitive agreement with GigCapital3, a special-purpose acquisition company, or SPAC. The combined operating company will be named Lightning eMotors and listed on the New York Stock Exchange upon closing the deal this spring. The company will trade under the ticker symbol ZEV once the agreement completes during the second quarter of this year.

The company is also increasing production capacity to its HQ in Colorado, as reported. The expansion had become urgent since Lightning announced an order from ABC Companies for a total value of $45 million this January. This will buy ABC 200 electric vehicles for the company fleet, including everything from Class 3 Transit passenger wagons to motorcoaches with fully electric powertrain systems.
