Automotive supplier Schaeffler has opened a new plant at its Szombathely location in western Hungary. The production site is the Schaeffler Group’s first pure e-mobility plant worldwide.
In addition, the plant is also a new centre of excellence for the production of components and systems for electrified drives. Schaeffler says it is creating 150 new jobs in e-mobility at the Hungarian location.
The construction of the Szombathely II plant began in 2020, and is already the Schaeffler Group’s second plant in western Hungary. “The new plant in Szombathely is a milestone in Schaeffler’s transformation and combines our strategic priorities of innovative strength, agility and efficiency. Our goal is sustainable mobility, which we will significantly advance on the basis of our global plant network as a technology partner for our customers. At the same time, the new plant underscores our ambition to continue our strong growth in e-mobility,” says Klaus Rosenfeld, CEO of Schaeffler AG.
In future, electric motors or hybrid transmissions will be produced on an area of around 15,000 square metres. The automotive supplier says that Szombathely II has a high degree of automation and the halls have a modular design and are digitalised throughout. For this reason, sensitive production processes for assemblies such as stators, rotors and the integration of magnets for synchronous and asynchronous machines require a high degree of cleanliness.
Jochen Schröder, Head of the E-Mobility Division at Schaeffler AG, says, “The Schaeffler Group expects to be generating new orders of between 2 and 3 billion euros annually from its e-mobility business from 2022 on. Szombathely will make a major contribution towards this growth as a centre of excellence operating in close alignment with our main electro-mobility plant in Bühl, Germany.”
By 2023, the company wants to increase annual capacity at the location to 800,000 products in multi-shift operation. Between 2026 and 2029, the company wants to achieve an annual target of 1.8 million manufactured products for partners in the automotive industry.
