Electric vehicles fueled with dirty energy at UK climate conference

At a global climate change event ‘Cop 26’ in Scotland, the electric vehicles used to ferry international delegates from venues to events in Glasgow will be charged via external combustion generators due to a lack of charging provision at accommodation sites.

While the generators will be powered with hydrogenated vegetable oils, the optics and climate burden caused by the conference are still not great.

A COP26 spokesperson has clarified that “Delegates are encouraged to use public transport as much as possible, with those accredited to the Blue Zone being given travel passes which allow access to a range of public transport options,” while “World leaders will be provided with EVs for the duration of their stay.”

Environmental campaigners are furious that sufficient electric chargers were not made available in time, and insisted heads of state should instead make use of the free electric shuttle bus service for Cop26 delegates, which would be charged in a cleaner way.
