What used to be the US headquarters of Hewlett-Packard is now home to Tesla engineers. The carmaker opened the doors of its new facility in Palo Alto, California.

Tesla marked the occasion by giving the California Governor Gavin Newsom a tour of the facility. The company is already talking about expansion and says it will focus on hiring engineers proficient in research and development and artificial intelligence, hoping to speed up efforts to produce autonomous vehicles and robots.

Musk said the new facility is “effectively a headquarters of Tesla” and that it is “kind of a dual-headquartered company.”

Tesla moved its main headquarters to Austin, Texas, in December 2021. They are now located adjacent to the company’s Gigafactory there. CEO Elon Musk said California was too tightly regulated and overtaxed and flaunted California pandemic safety measures.

The Fremont, California plant remains in operation and will even increase its production to 600,000 vehicles each year.
