UK: Asda offers grocery deliveries by EV

British supermarket chain Asda now offers more home delivery using electric vehicles. The retailer wants to be carbon net-zero by 2040.

So far, three stores in and around London and Sheffield now offer grocery deliveries using EVs only: Gillingham Pier, Old Kent Road and Sheffield Chaucer. Two more stores in Cardiff Bay and Leith will follow by the end of the year.

There is no mention of the type of vehicle Asda will be using for the deliveries. It only says that the EVs will have a range of 120 miles (or 193 kilometres) and take seven hours to fully charge.

“We are really excited that we are now able to make all deliveries from three stores entirely electric, and we’ll be closely monitoring the performance of the vans to learn and evolve our approach for the future”, says Asda senior vice president of e-commerce, Simon Gregg.

Asda aims to remove diesel vehicles from its delivery fleet entirely by 2028. The company announced a pilot with Wayne in April, offering autonomous grocery deliveries in London. The trial period is one year, after which the service could be extended to other Asda locations.
