Toyota presents 2nd gen C-HR hybrids

Toyota has presented the second generation of its coupé-like SUV model C-HR. The car is now being offered for the first time as a plug-in hybrid in addition to three full hybrid versions.

The new models get Toyota’s fifth-generation hybrid powertrain with more power, with key components extensively redesigned to reduce size and weight. The plug-in hybrid brings 223 hp of system power and an all-electric range of 66 kilometres.

The PHEV has the same drive train that Toyota presented in November 2022 in the fifth generation of the Prius. The Japanese company combines a 111 kW 2.0-litre petrol engine and “a 120 kW/160 hp transaxle electric motor on the front axle” – this is how Toyota describes the front-wheel drive system in which everything is housed in one casing (electric motor, planetary gearbox and differential).

Toyota says the CH-R plug-in hybrid should also offer a “one-pedal” like driving experience. Recuperation can be set to three levels, which should make driving in city traffic easier. Toyota explains that the system automatically adjusts the driving mode to optimise energy efficiency and recognises the best opportunities for recharging when the vehicle follows the navigation system’s route. The company’s new geofencing function allows the fossil-fuelled electric car to automatically switch to EV mode when the vehicle enters an environmental zone.

In addition to the PHEV with the 2.0-litre petrol engine, there are also full hybrids with 1.8- and 2.0-litre displacements. The 2.0-litre hybrid is also available with an additional electric motor on the rear axle as an option, resulting in an all-wheel-drive system called AWD-i.

For the design of the second generation, Toyota takes up the look of the CH-R Prologue study presented at the end of 2022. The standard model is 4.36 metres long, 1.83 metres wide and 1.57 metres high. The CH-R plug-in hybrid can accelerate to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds, and Toyota gives the top speed as 180 km/h. The announcement does not say when the CH-R will be available for order and at what price.

The second-generation Toyota C-HR and its batteries are manufactured in Sakarya, Turkey.

Five generations later and Toyota has yet to produce series hybrid (range extender) whereby a very small ICE only powers the batteries. Their "new" hybrid range is a joke considering their experience in the field.

Why are you publishing stories about hybrids?

NIssan's E-power system is about the only series hybrid on the market but the EVangelists don't like it because it still uses fuel - we should have had mass adoption of it over 20 years ago and than all cars would have been doing 80 mpg with a small 1.5 kWh buffer battery. Of coourse it still makes sense, given there isn;t enough lithium and big batteries weigh a tonne, literally, and cost the Earth - literally.
