As part of the new cooperation, SK On aims to increase its competitiveness in battery production by reducing costs and improving output. To this end, the performance, quality and stability of the technologies and services offered by the new partners will be tested—specifically, SK On mentions enhancing battery production equipment’s control and communication systems.

“Upgrading the controller is closely linked to improving equipment speed, which can contribute to increased production volumes,” the company said. “. SK On adds, “The use of intellectualised smart sensors enables quicker and more precise detection of equipment status and errors, leading to reduced recovery times and higher operational efficiency in the event of malfunctions.”

The advancement of network systems is further expected to result in reduced downtime and enhanced data redundancy and security.

A total of six companies have signed the Memorandum of Understanding with SK On. These include the German companies Beckhoff Automation and IFM Electronic, which specialise in automation solutions and intelligent sensors, respectively, and the Japanese company Yaskawa Electric, known for manufacturing industrial robots and machines. Other partners of SK On are the network equipment provider Cisco, headquartered in the USA, and Woowon Technology, a Korean supplier specialising in battery assembly equipment.

“Through this collaboration, SK On aims to lay the foundation for building a smart factory through the intellectualisation of production equipment,” said Oh Ki-young, Head of SK On’s Factory Innovation. “We are committed to collaborating with both our local and global partners possessing global competitiveness to enhance our manufacturing strength.”

SK On will apply the new technologies at the Seosan Plant 3, currently under construction in South Korea. It is to go into operation in 2025 and triple the company’s production capacity in the country, as reported.

According to SK On, the new smart factory design will also “boost productivity” of existing facilities.
