Electrify America opens indoor fast-charging park

Volkswagen's charging infrastructure subsidiary Electrify America has opened its first indoor fast-charging park in San Francisco. During the charging time at one of the 20 high-power chargers, two lounge areas, Wi-Fi and restrooms are available.

Around two years ago, Electrify America presented ‘The Charging Station of the Future, Today‘ design concept to create comfortable spaces that enhance the EV driver’s experience”. The VW subsidiary incorporated feedback from customers, findings from trend research and architectural and construction consultants into the design.

According to Electrify America, it already has two “flagship outdoor charging locations” – one in Baker and the second in Santa Clara. However, the indoor location that has now opened in the South Market (SoMa) district is the first to reflect the company’s strategy of building larger locations. While the first two charging parks have around ten chargers each, the new location is equipped with 20 charging stations.

However, the indoor location, which is accessible and monitored around the clock, offers more than just charging electric vehicles. For example, there are two temperature-controlled lounge areas on site with options to buy food and drinks. Free Wi-Fi is also available during the waiting time. Human needs have also been considered: two toilets with baby changing facilities complete the offer.

However, the plan is not to stop at the current flagship locations. The VW subsidiary is planning to set up further locations of this type in metropolitan areas across the country. “We’re committed to making EVs accessible to all, particularly in dense urban areas like San Francisco,” says Robert Barrosa, President and CEO of Electrify America. He adds: “Our expertise in building over 250 stations in California and more than 900 in North America uniquely positions us to bring high-quality charging infrastructure directly into communities where people live and work and support EV adoption across the state.”

Electrify America was founded five years ago. The charging infrastructure company now has 900 fast-charging locations with a total of 4,000 charging stations across North America. However, the network is set to grow further: not only by commissioning new locations, but also by expanding the number of charging points at existing locations and replacing existing charging stations with new models.
The integration of NACS is also part of this: Electrify America had already announced last summer that it would integrate the NACS connection into its own fast-charging stations in the USA as well as those of its Canadian offshoot Electrify Canada.
