Volvo EX90 production starts in South Carolina
The Ridgeville plant so far had only been home to the Volvo S60. Production of the EX90 was scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of 2023 but was delayed due to software issues.
During Volvo Cars’ Q4 2023 earnings conference call, CEO Jim Rowan said that the EX90 is the company’s most technically advanced car ever, so Volvo wanted to ensure that its software “was as good as it possibly could be” before it started shipping it to customers. Production has now finally commenced, with the first deliveries expected in North America and Europe to commence in the second half of the year.
Volvo Cars’ US plant has an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles. The company has made big investments in this factory in recent years. In addition to expanding it significantly, it refurbished the body shop and paint shop. The North American strategic production site now houses a battery pack production line as well. Production of the Volvo EX90 will take place even in China, where deliveries are scheduled to commence in November, as per a report from Autohome.

The Volvo EX90 will be available in three variants: Single Motor (RWD), Twin Motor (AWD), and Twin Motor Performance (AWD). The Single Motor (RWD) variant with 205 kW and 490 Nm of torque takes 8.4 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 kph and has a top speed of 180 kph. A 104 kWh battery pack gives it a WLTP range of ~580 km.
The Twin Motor (AWD) variant packs 300 kW and 700 Nm of torque, cutting the 0-100 kph acceleration time to 5.9 seconds. Its top speed is the same, though – 180 kph. A bigger, 111 kWh battery pack allows it to travel up to ~600 km on a full charge, also as per WLTP. Volvo Cars has confirmed that this battery pack comes from CATL.
The Twin Motor Performance (AWD) variant, with 380 kW and 910 Nm of torque, is even quicker, hitting 0 to 100 kph in 4.9 seconds. It can’t go any faster than 180 kph, though. It shares the 111 kWh battery pack with the middle variant, of which 107 kWh are usable, but its WLTP range is ~590 km because of higher power and torque.
The Volvo EX90’s prices start at $76,695 in the US and €83,700 in Germany.
