Lucid wants to provide police cars in California

Lucid has participated in the California Highway Patrol's vehicle tests with the Air electric saloon. For the tests, Lucid fitted one of the vehicles with the typical police modifications. However, it is still unclear whether this will remain a one-off model or whether an order will be placed. The car certainly turned out to be an eye-catcher.

Lucid itself published the photos of the unique vehicle on X. In the short social media post, the manufacturer also emphasised the “unmatched combination of range, interior and cargo space and performance.” It is not known whether the modified version of the Lucid Air was convincing. It is also unclear which drive version Lucid provided for the tests.

In the responses to the post, the unique model was predominantly well-received – primarily due to its appearance. However, many users are critical of a potential delivery order for Lucid by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The focus is primarily on the costs. Users cannot imagine police spending $100,000 on a pursuit vehicle.

In the USA, the Lucid Air currently starts at 71,400 dollars – with the smaller battery in the ‘Pure’ configuration. The Lucid Air Touring already costs 80,400 dollars, with the Grand Touring (112,400 dollars) also dropping the aforementioned 100,000 mark. The top-of-the-range Sapphire model for 250,500 dollars is unlikely to be involved – even though this 920 kW variant is also offered by US Armor as an armoured vehicle.

Desperation to make money and wrong move because the brand try position itself in a luxury market and end up trying to do this? How a buyer will feel expending so much money in an exclusive car to end up seeing Lucid as a police car?

Mercedes, BMW and Audi make police cars used in Europe, Hong Kong & Australia and that doesn’t seem to impact brand image. It’s kind of like saying Mercedes shouldn’t make Sprinters because it’s not part of their luxury image. Also the point Lucid is making are these can be used as intercepter vehicles that are so quick they can chase down any speeder. Keep in mind this is essentially a Saudi Arabian automaker with a US headquarters. The Saudi’s have police police cars made by Lamborghini, McLaren & Bugatti.
