Project EV introduces MCS charger with vehicle-to-grid function

The new charger presented by UK charge point supplier Project EV is aimed at the commercial vehicle sector. It offers 1 MW of charging power and vehicle-to-grid technology. The latter could serve as an additional source of income for electrified commercial fleets.

The company specifies that its solution was “designed for high-demand charging environments such as commercial locations, large fleet operations, and highway rest stops.” The power cabinet can support up to ten outlets, says Project EV, and is compatible with liquid-cooled and air-cooled systems.

Other than that, the details about Project EV’s new charger are rather sparse. It was developed with the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero and Innovate UK. It is also said to be “one of the first of its kind in the UK.”

The charger is also part of the ‘Electric Heavy Goods Vehicles – first roll-out and demonstration of V2X and grid decarbonisation’ project. The latter focuses on “V2G services potential of electric HGVs (eHGVs) – load-balancing, frequency stabilisation and resilience.” The goal is to show that by adding V2X capabilities to chargers and vehicles, operators of electric heavy-duty commercial fleets could “significantly reduce” the total cost of ownership. The project is headed by Kaasai Services and received about 1.4 million pounds in funding from the UK government.

“We are excited to play a key role in the groundbreaking ‘Electric Heavy Goods Vehicles – first roll-out and demonstration of V2X and grid decarbonisation’ project, part of the V2X Innovation Programme funded by the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero and delivered by Innovate UK,” said Richard Pink, Chief Technology Officer at Project EV. “Over the past year, our team has worked tirelessly to design and deliver the cutting-edge hardware for this trial. We are immensely proud of the innovative charging solution we’ve developed, featuring exceptional versatility with multiple charging guns tailored to meet diverse customer requirements. This project represents a major milestone in the journey toward sustainable transportation and the decarbonisation of our energy systems.”
