Rivian delivered over 51,000 electric cars in 2024
The target range for deliveries was between 50,500 and 52,000 vehicles and was hit precisely with the result of 51,579 vehicles. However, in the brief press release, the company does not break down the production and delivery figures for the R1S and R1T series and the delivery vans for Amazon. What is clear, however, is that Rivian has slightly exceeded the 2023 result (50,122 vehicles) in terms of deliveries.
In terms of production, the management had lowered the initial forecast of up to 57,000 units in October to between 47,000 and 49,000 vehicles because production had to be interrupted due to a missing component. This target was ultimately narrowly exceeded. The problem that led to the production pause has since been resolved. “In addition, the previously discussed shortage of a shared component on the R1 and RCV platforms is no longer a constraint on Rivian’s production,” the press release states. Rivian refers to its platform for light commercial vehicles (Rivian Commercial Vehicles) as RCV, on which the EDV-500 and EDV-700 models used by shareholder Amazon are based.
Rivian has not yet provided a production forecast for the current year. It is expected to do so on 20 February when the company presents its business figures for the fourth quarter and the full year 2024. However, they will likely not increase significantly until 2026, when the smaller R2 model will debut. According to previous information, Rivian plans to build 155,000 units of the electric mid-range SUV per year.
While General Motors and Ford, for example, both achieved new sales records for their US electric cars in the fourth quarter, Q4 was decent for Rivian, but nothing more. It is not clear from the press release how the supply chain problems have affected production. With 12,727 vehicles built in Q4, the first and third quarters were stronger. Regarding deliveries, Rivian achieved the best quarterly result of 2024 with 14,183 units, but already had a better quarter in 2023 with over 15,000 deliveries.
