Amazon has more than 20,000 Rivian delivery vans in the US
Amazon and Rivian struck a deal in 2019, according to which Rivian will deliver 100,000 units of its electric delivery van to Amazon. The first units were handed over in the US in 2022. All of them are to hit the road by the end of the decade.
Thanks to its growing number of electric vehicles in the US, Amazon says it has delivered one billion parcels via electric delivery vehicles. In July 2024, Amazon reportedly already had 15,000 Rivian vehicles in its fleet.
The milestone announcement comes just months after Rivian had to put the production of EDVs for Amazon on hold due to missing parts.
In addition to the Rivian vehicles, Amazon claims to have 15 other electric models in its fleet worldwide, including delivery vehicles, electric cargo bikes and electric rickshaws. For instance, Amazon India signed a deal with electric mobility provider Gentari in August, giving its subcontractors access to EVs. A special focus is on electric three-wheelers for last-mile deliveries. Amazon also brought 300 electric delivery vans from Rivian to Germany, as first mentioned in 2023.
But back to the US: Amazon needs thousands of chargers to operate this enormous fleet of electric vehicles. As a result, Amazon has become the largest private operator of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles in the US, as reported by Bloomberg in spring 2024. According to the report, the retail giant has installed more than 17,000 chargers in around 120 warehouses in the US in just over two years. The company itself reported 24,000 chargers at more than 150 delivery stations across the US as of November 2024.
Amazon is still one of Rivian’s major investors, holding a 16 per cent stake in the latter. The Electric Delivery Van was initially only produced for Amazon. However, the companies ended their exclusivity agreement at the end of 2023, as firm orders from the online dealer remained below expectations.
