Details of the transaction were not disclosed. The announcement merely states that Mobilize would acquire a “significant stake” in Free To X. However, the finalisation of the investment is subject to regulatory approval.

To date, Free To X operates a fast-charging network with 110 locations, which are mainly located on Italy’s motorways. The Renault subsidiary’s investment in the charging infrastructure company will now focus primarily on setting up fast-charging stations outside the motorway network. More information is not yet available.

“Entering into a partnership with Autostrade per l’Italia is a significant step in our mission to lead the transition towards sustainable mobility. By collaborating with Free To X, we are not only enhancing Italy’s charging infrastructure but also aligning with our strategic ambitions to establish a robust fast-charging network across Europe, making electric mobility easier for all,” said Gianluca De Ficchy, CEO of Mobilize.

“We are proud to join forces with Mobilize to provide fast and Hyperfast charging solutions for travelers boosting the growth outside the motorway network,” says Giorgio Moroni, CEO of Free To X. He adds: “The transaction confirms the relevance of the Company in the sector as a Key enabler of low-emission mobility in the transition path towards more sustainable mobility.”

Mobilize and Autostrade per l’Italia have received the green light to join forces. “As part of the agreement, Mobilize has completed its acquisition of a significant stake in Free To X,” the Mobilize press release states. However, the company does not go into further details.

Nevertheless, the less, the Renault subsidiary does list some figures about Free to X. The Italian CPO operates 110 EV charging locations along the Autostrade per l’Italia motorway network. Charging locations are all about 50 kilometres apart and feature high-power chargers with up to 400 kW. Free to X also plans to extend its network to ‘premium locations in Italy, outside Autostrade per l’Italia motorways.’

“Mobilize’s strategic alliance with Free To X is instrumental in advancing the European electric vehicle ecosystem. By expanding the network of charging stations across Europe, we are paving the way for a seamless transition to electric mobility, making it more accessible and convenient for everyone,” said Gianluca De Ficchy, CEO of Mobilize. “As the energy and automotive sectors become increasingly interconnected, the partnership with Free To X provides Mobilize with fast-track access to the Italian EV charging market. Moreover, it enables Renault Group to generate recurring revenues within the evolving landscape of the automotive value chain.”
