Grab and BYD extend their partnership for Southeast Asia
The partnership spans Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam and covers a range of models, including the Denza D9, BYD Atto3, BYD Seal and BYD M6. In fact, BYD’s premium brand Denza is said to “become the cornerstone of its GrabExec,” the ride-hailing company specifies.
Through the partnership, BYD promises “vehicles at the most competitive rates, with extended warranties on the EV vehicles’ batteries.” Drivers can purchase the cars through Grab’s car ownership schemes or rent them from the company’s fleet partners.
Moreover, Grab explains that the collaboration will “facilitate deep IoT integration.” For instance, the Grab driver app will be installed in the head unit of BYD vehicles so drivers can view jobs, chats and directions. Moreover, data such as wiper signals and travel speed will be fed back to the platform, helping Grab determine in what areas there will be more demand for drivers.
“Sustainable growth in Southeast Asia is a priority for us and we are always looking to improve our offerings to both our driver-partners and Grab users,” says Chuck Kim, Managing Director for Group Business Development at Grab. “This collaboration enables us to drive the transition to EVs forward by lowering the financial barriers that are often associated with EVs, and in the long run deliver economic benefits to our driver-partners which may include fuel cost savings.”
BYD and Grab first announced their partnership last year, initially focussing on Indonesia. Grab added more than 1,000 electric BYD cars to its fleet there.
The new deal is similar to the one signed between Uber and BYD in August 2024. To that end, BYD will deliver 100,000 electric vehicles to Uber fleets “across key global markets,” starting with Europe and Latin America. In Australia, BYD and Uber already offered special leasing and financing rates for 10,000 BYD Atto 3s in 2023. The goal was also to boost the used car market in Australia, as some units are resold to private buyers after as little as 12 months.
