BYD presents new hybrid powertrain DM-i

BYD has unveiled a new plug-in hybrid powertrain called DM-i, which is expected to reduce fuel consumption to 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres. Three BYD models will initially be equipped with the DM-i hybrid system, which is now entering series production: The Qin, the Song and the Tang.

BYD-ADL to assemble electric buses in the UK

Partners Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) and BYD’s UK offshoot have announced plans to assemble the chassis of their electric solo and double-decker buses for the UK market directly at ADL’s British plants from the second half of 2021.

EV sales in China increase as 2020 ends

China’s largest electric car manufacturers have released their December 2020 sales figures, taking stock of the year as a whole. Towards the end of 2020, BYD and WM Motor both made gains, as did Nio and Xpeng Motors. The latter duo posted new sales records for December.

Turin orders 100 electric buses from BYD

After the Turin transport operator GTT terminated a contract with the Chinese manufacturer Yutong for the delivery of 100 electric buses, BYD has now received the order. The first 50 of the electric buses have already been firmly ordered from BYD and are to be delivered to Turin in April 2021.

Ireland launches huge tender for electric double-deckers

Ireland’s national transport authority NTA published a tender for up to 800 all-electric double-decker buses for use in the country’s large cities, as well as on some town bus services. Buying is to start in the second half of 2022 over a period of five years.

China: BYD to build 20 GWh battery plant in Bengbu

BYD is planning a new factory for electric vehicle batteries with an annual production capacity of 20 GWh in the city of Bengbu in Anhui province, China. The total investment for the production facility is expected to amount to six billion yuan, about 750 million euros.

Keolis deploys more than 240 e-buses in the Netherlands

Keolis Nederland has put 246 all-electric buses into operation in the provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel. This is the bulk of the order for 259 e-buses awarded to BYD at the end of 2019. The remaining 13 battery buses are scheduled for delivery in spring 2021.

China marks strong NEV sales in November

According to the China Passenger Car Association, around 169,000 New Energy Vehicles (BEVs, PHEVs and FCEVs) were sold in China in November, 136.5 per cent more than in the same month last year. Most electric vehicles sold last month were SAIC GM Wuling (SGMW), BYD and Tesla.

Polish bus manufacturer Solaris under consideration for two large electric bus orders from Greece: Athens and Thessaloniki are considering expanding their fleets by a total of 1,300 buses. A decision expected in the next few months.

BYD increases profits through Q3 of 2020

BYD generated sales of 44.52 billion yuan in the third quarter of 2020 (around 5.72 billion euros). This is around 40 per cent more than in the same period last year. Net profit rose by over 1,300 per cent to 1.75 billion yuan, equivalent to around 220 million euros.

Finland to receive 106 electric buses from BYD

BYD is expanding its electric buses to Finland for the first time with a significant order. The operator Nobina has ordered a total of 106 electric buses from BYD, 64 of which are destined for the capital Helsinki and 42 for the city of Turku, including a new model from the Chinese manufacturer.

BYD opens electric bus battery factory in Brazil

BYD has now started operations at its battery factory in Brazil. The factory is the third factory in the country belonging to the Chinese electric vehicle giant, though this will be their first battery factory and will produce lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries primarily for electric buses.

A large vehicle-to-grid project with electric buses has now been launched at a bus depot in North London. The Bus2Grid project is testing V2G systems with an initial 28 electric double-decker buses with which more than 1 MW of energy can be fed back into the grid.
