Chrysler pauses work on electric crossover

Stellantis already has electric cars on offer for many of its brands, and some of them have ambitious electric plans. However, US brand Chrysler does not yet have an electric model - and that will likely remain the case for some time to come. The development of an electric crossover has been paused "until further notice."

At CES 2022, Chrysler presented the Airflow Concept, a concept of an electric crossover model for the high-volume mid-size class. The aim was to premiere the first electric model by 2025, but the Airflow study was scrapped in the course of 2023, even though the concept car itself looked very close to series production. However, Chrysler initiated a follow-up project called the C6X, which was also intended to result in an electric crossover – although the design was based more on the Halcyon study presented in 2024.

However, that will probably not happen. The portal Mopar Insiders quotes from an email to suppliers, according to which the associated programme ” has been put on hold until further notice. Therefore, any spending associated with this program should be suspended immediately.”

That means that for now, the model range will remain limited to the Voyager and Pacifica vans – even though they are basically two versions of the same model. According to the portal Carscoops, “it now seems uncertain when the new crossover will be launched.”

Chrysler itself emphasises that the programme has been interrupted, but not cancelled. “Chrysler brand CEO Chris Feuell confirmed the program is paused for now as we assess the market and our customers’ needs and wants,” the carmaker told Auto News in a statement. “As the Chrysler brand celebrates its 100th anniversary this summer, the future for Chrysler is bright with a refreshed Chrysler Pacifica coming in 2026, a new crossover coming soon after and a third product, inspired by the Halcyon concept, to follow.”

Global challenges in the automotive sector are forcing Stellantis to reevaluate their large portfolio of brands earlier than they had hoped and planed for. With Tavares out don’t be surprised if multiple brands are retired this year, including Chrysler. Dodge, Vauxhall, & Lancia are on the short list too. Along with DS & Abarath as stand alone brands. The question isn’t if, but rather how many, brands will go.
