Cantonal police in Basel adds more electric cars to its fleet

The cantonal police in the Swiss city of Basel is replacing more combustion engines in their fleet with electric vehicles. The first Mercedes eVito, for example, is now in use as a patrol vehicle, replacing a VW T 6.1. Some motorbikes will also accelerate the fleet's electric in future.

The eVito is the forerunner of several identical electric models that will soon replace other VW vans as part of the normal replacement cycle at the Basel City Cantonal Police. The cantonal police’s motorbike fleet will also be supplemented by electrically powered vehicles, specifically the Zero DSR/X. In addition to regular patrol duties, the new electric motorbikes will also be used at major events, according to those responsible.

The cantonal police also announced that a Skoda Octavia stationed in Bettingen will be replaced by an electric Skoda Enyaq. “The requirements for a service vehicle in Bettingen are very different from the requirements for other service vehicles,” explains the police. In particular, the demands on ground clearance are higher in Bettingen than in the city, “which is why the Skoda Enyaq was procured and equipped as a replacement.”

The Basel unit became known beyond Switzerland’s borders in 2019 after putting seven Teslas into service. Just last month, the cantonal police announced that it would be operating the septet for longer than planned. The reason: the electric cars last longer in police operations than initially assumed. The Basel police has around 200 vehicles on the road. In addition to the seven Teslas, eight Nissan Leafs joined the fleet three years ago – but only one of them is on the road in police livery.
