First Milence charging park in Great Britain in operation

Electric truck CPO Milence has opened its first site in the UK. It is located at Able Humber Port (AHP) in the small English town of Immingham on the A180 and will initially comprise four CCS chargers with up to 400 kW power, which will supply eight charging points.

Able Humber Port is located on the east coast of England, roughly on the same level as Sheffield and Leeds, and can be reached via the North Sea – making it an important seaport for the region. The AHP handles over 30 ro-ro (roll-on/roll-off) and lo-lo (lift-on/lift-off) shipments every week, making the port an important trade link between the UK and Northern Europe, Scandinavia and the Baltic region.

The Immingham hub on the A180 with direct access to the M180, M18 and M1 motorways is thus “ideally placed to serve the vital transport and logistics operations connecting the UK with Europe,” says Milence. In the first phase, Milence installed four Alpitronic Hypercharger HYC400s, which offer eight CCS charging points. The standard tariff in England is £0.399/kWh net. Expansion to the MCS megawatt standard is possible at a later date. Milence commissioned the first MCS charging points at the end of February in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. However, it will be some time before the large-scale rollout, as series vehicles with MCS capability are still missing, for example.

Otherwise, the new charging hub in Immingham follows the familiar Milence concept: the charging points are covered and designed so that they can also be accessed by a long truck. The site also offers several amenities for drivers, such as toilets and vending machines. To ensure the safety of drivers and freight, the car parks are fenced off and equipped with access control and camera surveillance.

Milence, a joint venture between Daimler Truck, Traton and the Volvo Group, aims to have at least 1,700 high-performance charging stations across Europe and the UK by 2027. In doing so, the manufacturers want to contribute to building a charging network for heavy-duty electric trucks and coaches. However, the companies regularly emphasise that they do not consider the operation of charging stations their main task – truck-compatible charging points from other operators are thus needed to support the ramp-up of electric trucks.

“The opening of our first UK charge hub in Immingham marks a significant step in the UK’s transition to electric road transport. This strategically located site underscores our commitment to providing reliable and accessible charging infrastructure for the growing number of electric truck operators,” says Milence CEO Anja van Niersen. “This is just the first step in our UK expansion, and we are dedicated to working with all stakeholders to accelerate the shift towards a sustainable future for the transport industry.”
