Limited edition Renault 5 Turbo 3E to hit the road in 2027
The French carmaker announced that the R5 Turbo will be limited to 1,980 units. That number is a tribute to the year in which the first Renault 5 Turbo was launched. Each copy is numbered, and customers can choose their preferred number when placing their order, says Renault. The French carmaker plans to open the order books in the coming weeks, with the first deliveries taking place in the first half of 2027.
The R5 Turbo 3E was presented as a concept car at the 2022 Paris Motor Show. In December 2024, Renault said the car would go on sale. The Renault 5 Turbo 3E combines its battery-electric drive with a retro-futuristic design. The charging connection is located in one of the rear air intakes, which is reminiscent of the original turbo. The vehicle’s carbon structure is both light and extremely rigid, Renault emphasises.
“Reinterpreting the legendary Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2 is a bold challenge. We have preserved their exuberance and racing spirit while integrating modern technologies and optimized aerodynamics for the electric era,” says Gilles Vidal, VP of Design for Renault & Ampere. “Every line, every volume expresses a balance between performance and character. More than a tribute, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E is a machine of sensations and emotions that everyone can personalize infinitely.”
In the wake of today’s announcement of the small series, Renault also revealed further details: the R5 Turbo 3E will be 4.08 metres long and thus 16 centimetres longer than the R5 E-Tech. To this end, the windscreen was moved back and the wheelbase extended from 2.54 to 2.57 metres. The R5 Turbo 3E is also 2.03 metres wide and 1.38 metres high. Renault says that the Renault 5 Turbo 3E is as long as a city car and as wide as a supercar.

The car is powered by two rear-wheel hub motors, each with 200 kW. In combination, this results in over 540 hp, which may have motivated Renault to speak of a “mini-supercar” and an “electric sports car.” The car can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in 3.5 seconds, and its top speed on the racetrack is 270 kph.
A button on the steering wheel is designed to provide a temporary power boost when overtaking. Another button allows the regenerative braking effect to be adjusted in four stages. In addition, four multi-sense driving modes are available: Snow, Regular, Sport and Race, which also includes the drift assist function.
Renault now also released the eagerly awaited battery information: the R5 Turbo 3E is equipped with a 70 kW lithium-ion battery. And for the first time, Renault is relying on an 800-volt architecture to ensure ultra-fast charging. It should enable the R5 Turbo 3E to be charged with up to 350 kW, charging the battery from 15 to 80 per cent in just 15 minutes. The manufacturer has yet to provide any information on range and consumption.
Renault did not develop the new Renault 5 Turbo 3E alone, but also drew on the expertise of its sister brand Alpine in the development of sporty and exclusive electric models. The French call it a model family: the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric as a city car, the Alpine A290 as a sporty city car and the Renault 5 Turbo 3E sports car will form a unique trio based on the combination of the Renault 5, Renault 5 Alpine and Renault 5 Turbo from the 1980s.
“Renault 5 Turbo 3E is a fantastic opportunity for Alpine to demonstrate its expertise in engineering, architecture and the development of electric sports cars, all designed to enhance the driving experience,” says Philippe Krief, CEO of the Alpine brand and CTO of the Renault Group. “To meet the very ambitious specifications of this ‘restomod’ inaugurating the mini-supercar category, and to equip it with the most modern and innovative technologies, we have spared no expense, developing a specific platform and the world premiere of these 540-horsepower in-wheels motors enabling a 0-100 km/h time of around 3 seconds. The chassis has been calibrated to reproduce the same agile sensations as before, and to put driving pleasure above all else.”
