USA: Ford integrates NACS charger routing

Ford EV drivers in the US can now use Apple Maps in CarPlay to plan their routes and will automatically be guided to fast-chargers offering NACS along the way. That is, if they need to charge to get to their destination.

The service is available for all Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning and requires an iPhone running iOS 17 and later. The routing will also display the estimated battery level at the driver’s destination, suggesting charging stations along the way if needed. According to Ford, customers had to previously “manually open another app, then enter a NACS fast charger as a destination to have it added to their route.”

Ford was the first US carmaker to gain access to Tesla’s Supercharger network in North America, after announcing in May 2023 that it would install the NACS charging port for all new vehicles from 2025. The announcement was followed by a wave of other carmakers saying they would do the same – including General MotorsVolvoRivian, and Polestar. For all models still using CCS, Ford offered complimentary adapters, saying it has distributed 140,000 free Tesla charging adapters to its customers.

But not just carmakers have begun adapting the North American Charging Standard – charging station manufacturers have done so as well. EVgo just recently announced that it would adopt the standard and that it would roll out stations with both NACS and CCS. Chargepoint, for example, did the same in 2023.

Tesla released the design of its proprietary Supercharger connector in North America in November 2022 and invited car manufacturers and charging network operators to use Supercharger plugs and sockets in the future to make its system the charging standard in North America. It officially became a standard (SAE J3400) at the end of 2023.
