Hireco to install Sunswap refrigeration units in commercial fleet
The refrigeration units can be fitted to a range of commercial vehicles, including cargo bicycles, but in this case will be installed in the trailers of HGVs to aid cold supply chains. The units are powered by rooftop solar arrays as well as battery packs, and can be charged in 80 minutes using a Type 2 EV socket. Additionally, the Endurance units can be managed remotely or using a touchscreen panel. Sunswap claims the Endurance can maintain its cooling properties for 22 hours on a single charge.
Hireco, which works with more than 70 UK transport companies, said the agreement will help it offer customers a zero-emission alternative to diesel-powered transport refrigeration.
Hireco Group CEO James Smith said: “This investment in Sunswap’s technology aligns with our commitment to sustainable transport solutions. We’re focused on helping our customers reduce their environmental impact while maintaining operational excellence. Sunswap’s proven zero-emission refrigeration technology offers our customers a practical path to cleaner, more efficient cold chain operations.”
Sunswap claims its refrigeration units can provide running costs that are up to 81% lower than traditional diesel systems, and save around 120 tonnes of CO2 over a decade. The company says it is undergoing a period of growth following a £17.3m investment by VC fund BGF and an expansion of its Surrey manufacturing plant.
In November 2024, logistics firm DFDS ordered ten Endurance units from Sunswap – marking the first time that Sunswap’s product entered full-time service. Speaking at the time, Sunswap CEO Michael Lowe said: “This is a defining moment for Sunswap and sustainable transport refrigeration. After five years of engineering innovation and extensive trials, seeing the first Sunswap units enter full-time service with DFDS marks the beginning of diesel-free cold chain operations at scale.”
