BP to sell off gas stations in Austria

The mineral oil company BP wants to sell its petrol station network in Austria before the end of this year. The company hopes to find a buyer for more than 260 petrol station locations and charging stations by the end of the third quarter.

According to BP, the marketing process will begin immediately and the contract is expected to be signed by the end of the third quarter – so by 30 September 2025 at the latest. Subject to all relevant approvals, the sale itself is expected to go through by the end of the year. In addition to the petrol stations and charging stations, the fleet business associated with BP Austria and the shares in the operating company of the Linz terminal are also to be sold.

Of the 260 Austrian petrol stations, only 120 are directly owned by the company, the rest are operated by partners – but these contracts are also to be transferred to the potential buyer. However, it is not clear from the announcement what purchase price the British company has in mind.

Incidentally, BP sees the decision to divest its mobility and convenience business in Austria as the “latest example” of its own strategy to reorganise and refocus its downstream business. As reported, BP also plans to sell all of its 310 petrol stations in the Netherlands by the end of 2025.

“We have a high-quality retail business in Austria with excellent locations, great people and a loyal customer base. Over recent years we have grown the business to become number two major branded retailer in the market,” said Emma Delaney, Executive Vice President for Customers & Products at BP. “As bp now looks to focus downstream and reshape our portfolio, we believe that a new owner will be best placed to unlock the business’s full potential.”
