Rivian produced significantly more EVs than it delivered

Rivian Automotive has published its production and delivery figures for the first quarter of the year. The difference between the number of EVs produced and the number of EVs delivered in the past three months is striking.

The US electric carmaker says it produced 14,611 vehicles at its production facility in Normal, Illinois, from January to the end of March. That is slightly more than the number of vehicles produced in Q1/2024, when a total of 13,980 units rolled off Rivan’s production lines.

However, in the first quarter of 2024, Rivian handed over 13,588 vehicles – almost as many as it produced. During the same period this year, the carmaker only delivered 8,640 vehicles, meaning it produced nearly 6,000 more cars than it was able to sell. That is a 36% decline in first-quarter deliveries YoY.

It needs to be said that this is not the first time that Rivian (or any other carmaker for that sake) built more cars than it had customers – but a difference of nearly 6,000 units is striking.

In 2024, the US manufacturer produced a total of 49,476 vehicles and delivered 51,579. The electric car startup currently builds the R1T pickup, the R1S SUV, and the Electric Delivery Van (EDV) for Amazon on a separate line.

Rivian does not address the issue in the strikingly short press release. It also does not break down production and delivery figures by model. Instead, the carmaker reaffirmed its 2025 delivery range of 46,000 to 51,000 vehicles. The earnings call for Q1/2025 will follow at the beginning of May.

I keep seeing this same narrative repeated. Very few of these articles mention that these numbers were exactly inline with management guidance. In fact, there were HIGHER then expected. Why is that not mentioned? I know "doom and gloom" gets clicks, but put a few minutes in and do some simple research.

For the most part, Rivian has done a pretty good job with managing production levels. I do wish they would try to attract more Tesla trade-ins because a real market opportunity exists considering the change in Tesla owner attitude towards Elon Musk. Rivian pricing may be causing them to miss out on a selling opportunity.
