20 new electric buses for New Jersey
In total, NJ Transit plans to purchase 208 60-foot articulated buses and 20 battery-electric buses “at a cost not to exceed $393,432,390, plus 10 per cent for contingencies, subject to the availability of funds.” In other words, nearly four hundred million dollars (3.6 hundred million euros) have been earmarked for the addition to the fleet.
The articulated buses will replace older 40-foot variants, doubling the passenger capacity to up to 100 people and cutting emissions by up to 80 per cent. There is no information on how many people the electric buses will have to be able to carry or where they will be used. The company only states that ‘the articulated and Battery Electric Buses will feature low flooring to allow customers to embark and disembark more quickly. All new buses will include new customer amenities such as USB charging ports, security cameras, blind spot cameras and turn warning systems to enhance customer experience and safety.’
“Replacing outdated buses and rail cars across our system is part of our continued commitment to improving service for our customers — and today’s Board action is a meaningful step forward,” said NJ Transit President & CEO Kris Kolluri. “Governor Murphy’s FY2026 budget continues to prioritize transit, giving NJ TRANSIT the ability to accelerate advancing a modern, more reliable fleet that will better accommodate growing ridership and significantly enhance the customer experience.”
There is also no timetable for the procurement yet, but there is one likely candidate to deliver the electric buses: back in 2022, NJ Transit placed an order with New Flyer for eight all-electric Xcelsior Charge NG forty-foot heavy-duty transit buses. The contract is valid for five years (so until 2027) with the option to purchase up to 75 additional battery-electric units.
