Mahle secures major contract for DC converters in China

Mahle has landed a major order worth €200 million to supply DC converters for next-generation battery-electric vehicles from an international manufacturer in China. Series production at Mahle’s site in Changshu is scheduled to begin in mid-2028.

As is customary in the supplier industry, the client’s identity has not been disclosed. What is clear, however, is that the electric vehicle in question will operate on an 800-volt system. According to Mahle, the DC/DC converter will be used to ‘transform the voltage of the high-voltage battery from 800 volts into a low voltage level of 12 volts.’ That enables the operation of all 12-volt components in the vehicle that cannot run directly on 800 volts – such as cameras, multimedia systems, and electric pumps, the German supplier explains.

Mahle opened the R&D centre at the Changshu plant in 2021 and is turning the location into a production and development hub for e-mobility. According to the company, around 600 employees are currently based at the site. Mahle says it collaborates with ‘all international vehicle and engine manufacturers in China, as well as major Chinese OEMs’ in China.

“China is the leading market for the electrification of vehicles, and I am pleased that this order will enable us to expand our presence in the largest automotive market in the world,” said Roger Busch, Mahle Head of Sales & Technology and Member of the Management Committee. “The speed of innovation in China is enormous. We see potential for further growth, especially in the areas of electrification and thermal management.”
