Hyundai delivers its first electric buses to Japan
The buses are fitted with a 145 kWh battery and a ‘high-efficiency motor delivering a power output of up to 160 kW/217 PS.’ According to the manufacturer, the vehicles have a range of 233 km at a constant speed of 60 km/h or 330 km at a constant speed of 30 km/h.
The vehicles will go into operation on the Island of Yakushima, where the Iwasaki Group is the local transport operator. The island is located in the Kagoshima Prefecture, which aims to be carbon neutral by 2050. The order for the electric buses was announced in July of last year.
Hyundai points out that its medium-sized, low-floor electric buses suit local conditions. They offer offer a gradeability of 25% and are equipped with Vehicle Dynamics Control to ‘ensure safe and stable driving on the island’s mountainous roads, characterised by steep slopes and sharp curves.’
The 9-metre electric bus accommodates 55 people. That includes the driver and 54 passengers, 18 on the seats and 36 standing. A battery management and cooling system will help make charging more effective and maximise driving range in ‘Yakushima’s hot and humid climate’.
“I am delighted to see Hyundai’s Elec City electric buses running here on Yakushima, contributing towards a cleaner island environment,” said Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chair Jaehoon Chang. “Being part of Yakushima’s zero-emission island initiative is a significant step towards achieving carbon neutrality on the island by 2050.”
