Mercedes unveils long-wheelbase version of new CLA in China
At the Auto Shanghai, Mercedes-Benz emphasised that this is the company’s first long-wheelbase model for this vehicle class – previous long-wheelbase versions for the Chinese market included the C-Class and E-Class. The stretched variant, dubbed CLA L, is not radically different: both the wheelbase and overall length are four centimetres longer than the European-market version. That means a wheelbase of 2.83 instead of 2.79 metres, and a total length of 4.76 versus 4.72 metres. As is customary in China, the additional space benefits rear-seat passengers. Width and height remain unchanged.
In China, the electric CLA L will be offered with rear-wheel drive, a two-speed transmission, and an 800-volt electric architecture. It boasts a CLTC range of up to 866 kilometres according to CLTC, which translates to an energy consumption of 10.9 kWh/100 km under the same standard. By comparison, the European version achieves a WLTP range of 792 kilometres.
The new CLA is the first model based on Mercedes’ new Modular Architecture (MMA). The vehicle was unveiled in March in Rome and is intended to mark Mercedes’ breakthrough into the electric era, following the underwhelming performance of the EQ series.
In terms of design, the new CLA delivers on what was already apparent beneath the camouflage of the frequently shown prototypes: proportions with a long bonnet remain close to the previous combustion model – understandable given that a 48-volt mild-hybrid petrol version is also planned (this variant will not feature a frunk). The headlights and rear lights, with their seamless transition into continuous light strips front and rear, are reminiscent of the Smart #1 and #3 models, which also bear the influence of the Mercedes design team.
On the technical side, the standout feature is undoubtedly the new 800-volt system. This enables significantly higher charging speeds and shorter charging times, while also aiming to enhance the overall system efficiency. The MMA platform offers two battery options: a cost-conscious 58-kWh LFP battery for base models, and an 85-kWh battery with NMC cathode and silicon oxide additive in the graphite anode for top-tier variants.
Production of the electric Mercedes CLA appears to have already started at the Rastatt plant. The likely reason for this early start is a brought-forward order release date – reportedly moved from mid-June to 29 April.
As part of the Auto Shanghai, Mercedes-Benz also revealed the Vision V show car. It offers a preview of the top-end variant based on the upcoming Van Electric Architecture (VAN.EA).
